Atiness Phri is a 44 year old women with 7 children living in Ibex compound Katete District of Eastern province of Zambia. Atiness learned that she could start a business with a very small amount as low as $50 and she managed to buy and grow vegetables (cabbages, tomatoes beans and potatoes). She began selling them on the market she was running though had poor quality business skills. She didn’t know how to manage her business properly such as how to calculate profit, how to separate her home expenses from business expenses, and even though she was in business since 2005, her business could not grow due to lack of capital and poor business skills.

In 2019, she decided to get a business loan from Tivwane Money Solution’s Microfinance Katete Branch. Her goal was to expand her business by ordering other vegetables she could not sell on the market, Atiness did not have much collateral to use as a surety (just one upright fridge). She could not manage to borrow money from bank or other money lenders due to insufficient collateral and the small size of her business.

Atiness managed to apply for a loan of $100 in three months that was a first circle loan from Tivwane Money Solution Katete Branch. Before she received the loan, she completed entrepreneurship training skills and financial inclusion training where she was trained how to manage a business. She learned how to calculate net profit and how to separate business expenses from home expenses. Due to her book keeping and budgeting skills, she managed to make a very good profit for the first time and managed to buy a 42” Plasma television, paid for her children to go to school. When this loan came to an end she qualified to apply for another second circle loan of $200 which she received in a 4 months period.

She managed to find markets in Katete. .Memory says that small entrepreneurs or marketers had so much to learn. “When she started,” she says, “the marketers didn’t know how to collect commodities together from the gardens where they order them, now she sells a lot of goods at a better price. She does not wasting fuel and time.” Because she has savings and farmers are now able to bring their produce to her and she buy them from their gardeners in bulk then she sell them when prices are high instead of selling them at low prices right away for fast cash.
